In Daniel 12:9 the angel says to Daniel, "Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end."
I believe that many Old and New Textament prophecies were likewise sealed until the end times; i.e., until the present and near future.
The identity of the Abomination of Desolation is deliberately obscured in Scripture; so what might seem obvious is not likely to be the correct interpretation. An obscure and more likely interpretation, considering God's stated disgust for the temple and temple practices, would be that the Abomination of Desolation is the Jewish Temple itself.
