And the cities of the nations fell

In my previous post I brought the predictions of the results of global warming (rising of the sea, extreme weather, economic woes) into relation with the words of the casting of the seventh vial in Revelation.

The pictures of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010 showed the fallen buildings and dwellings in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other cities in the region. The words of Revelation 16:19, that is also part of the casting of the seventh vial came to mind “and the cities of the nations fell”. During the year 2009 a number of towns and cities across the globe were devastated by earthquake.

January 2009, City of Manokwani, Papua, Indonesia

Four people were killed and dozens injured after a series of powerful earthquakes hit eastern Indonesia early in January 2009.The strongest tremor, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck north of the city of Manokwari in West Papua province on 4 January 2009. Several buildings were flattened in Manokwari.

8 January 2009, Town of Cinchona, Costa Rica, 6.1 earthquake

Houses collapsed and a hydro-electric plant in the devastating earthquake in Costa Rica.

Italy

A powerful earthquake struck central Italy on the morning of April 6, 2009 killing 307 people and making tens of thousands homeless. Some 65,000 people were displaced by the 6.3 magnitude quake, which hit the mountainous Abruzzo region in the early hours, catching residents in their sleep. Many of the dead were from L'Aquila, a 13th-century mountain city of 68,000 people about 100 km (60 miles) east of Rome, and surrounding towns and villages in the Abruzzo region. Houses, historic churches and other buildings were demolished in the worst quake to hit Italy in three decades.

Yunnan Province China

An earthquake on 10 July 2009 in Yunnan Province, China left hundreds of casualties after it destroyed about 18,000 homes in southwest China. The magnitude 6.0 quake, killed one person, injured at least 324 others, 40,000 properties were damaged. Emergency services evacuating 400,000 people from the region.

Albania

About 1,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged when an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck northeast Albania, 6 September 2009. The epicenter was said to be located in the Dibra area close to the Macedonian border, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the capital, Tirana.

Three quakes three days in succession

Samoa Islands region, 8.1 earthquake triggered a tsunami that devstated towns and villages of the Samoa Islands on 29 September 2009. Islands fled to the hills for safety.

Southern Sumatra, Indonesia, 30 September 2009 earthquake of 7.6 magnitude. Southern Sumatra, Indonesia, 1 October 2009, 6.6 magnitude:

The epicenter of the former was 45 kilometres west-northwest of Padang. Reports state 1,115 dead, 1,214 severely injured and 1,688 slightly injured. Around 135,000 houses were severely damaged. An estimated 250,000 families (1,250,000 people) were affected by the earthquakes through the total or partial loss of their homes and livelihoods.

Malawi 19 December 2009

Malawi was struck by a series of earthquakes with reports of relocating 200,000 in the latest quake of 6.0 magnitude, killing 3 and injured over 200. Malawi was and is currently in the process of relocating over 4,000 people from the earlier earthquakes (from December 6th to December 12th 2009) ranging from 4.6 to 5.9. These earthquakes severity and frequencies have caused great concern because of the regions location, “Water has now started immerging from the cracks and no place within the area seems safe, this is a rift valley close to the lake and there could be flooding shortly,” District Commissioner said.

Haiti

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic earthquake. Its epicentre was near Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of at least 33 aftershocks, 14 of which were between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9.] The International Red Cross estimated that about three million people were affected by the quake. As of 24 January 2010 the confirmed death toll was 150,000.

The earthquake caused major damage to Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other settlements in the region. Many notable landmark buildings were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail.
